GOLD Coast waterman Jamie Mitchell is on track to claim his eighth straight paddleboard world title after storming to victory in the Honolua Ocean Paddle Race.

Mitchell completed the 8km open ocean race from Snapper Rocks to Currumbin in 51 minutes and 48 seconds at the weekend, completing an impressive `training run' before the 51.5km Molokai to Oahu world championships in Hawaii on July 26.

"It is a good event because it puts you in a race situation and you don't get that with training," said 32-year-old lifeguard Mitchell, pictured powering to victory on Saturday.

"It is usually a good indication of how our training has been leading into (the Molokai).

"The Honolua is only 40-50 minutes and the Molokai is anywhere between five to six hours, so it isn't as big but it is definitely good to see how you are feeling coming up to it."

Mitchell crossed the line almost four minutes clear of second-placed Broadbeach paddler Dean Hamner (55:37) and Mermaid Beach's Sean Campbell (56:22) in third.

It was a fitting finish Mitchell, who was forced to withdraw from the Honolua last year when the rudder on his paddleboard snapped as he made his way out to the starting line.

Despite his incredible success overseas, the seven-time world paddleboarding champion remains largely unknown at home.

"If you mention paddling or the Molokai and my name over there in Hawaii, more people would know who I was there than in Australia," said Mitchell, who is also an accomplished big-wave surfer and stand-up paddle rider.

"It can be frustrating. Anyone else that has won seven consecutive world titles would probably be pretty well off. But I make a pittance compared to what some other guys make and can only just keep my head above water at the moment."

A record 115-strong field competed in the paddleboard, stand up paddle and outrigger canoe paddle divisions on Saturday.

Northcliffe clubbie Bianca Lee (62:26) won the open women's paddleboard title ahead of Australian ironwoman champion Kristyl Smith and three-time Coolangatta Gold champ Hayley Bateup respectively.

Gold Coast lifeguard James 'Billy' Watson scorched to victory in the unlimited open men's stand up paddle division in 56 minutes and 40 seconds.

Sunshine Coast Paddle Maker Woogie Marsh claimed Victory in the Stock Open Men's Stand Up Paddle Division in 1 hr 5 and 50 seconds. "Conditions were less than ideal for paddling steering SUP boards - with the wind coming over your left shoulder for most of the race made for hard paddling".

It was a very Cold morning but a handful of dedicated Noosa Head Beach Boy Surfing Club Members braved the chilly clear sky's to paddle out and help with the Water safety of the Blue Water Swim.
This was the write up in the paper.

Melissa Gorman regained her Noosa Blue Water title in emphatic style yesterday, beating her closest rival by over half a minute.

Gorman had enjoyed a stranglehold on the 2km event earlier in the decade winning it in 2006, 2007 and 2008 however was last year beaten by friend and close rival Kate Brookes-Peterson. However with Brookes-Peterson sitting out the event for personal reasons, Gorman reigned supreme, taking out the women’s division in a time of 23 minutes 7 seconds. “It was perfect conditions out there today, the water was so clear you could see everything. I got a fair start and moved through the pack quickly to control the race,” she said.

Gorman got out of the blocks early and was rarely challenged. Burleigh Heads’ Danielle Defrancesco and New South Wales’ Stacy Hansford battled it out for second before Hansford stumbled close to the line, allowing the Queenslander to grab silver in a time of 23.38.

In the men’s race, Trent Grimsey beat out his brother Codie to claim a decisive win. Grimsey had well and truly grabbed control of the race after getting off to a bad start to finish in 22.21, 46 seconds ahead of his younger sibling.

Pelican Waters surf lifesaver Sean McCullagh took out his fourth consecutive title in the 1km event.

Aloha Beach Boys

If you missed it we were in the Noosa Journal last Thursday.

Noosa has a new surfing club - the Noosa Heads Beach Boy Surfing Club.  Don't worry, it has nothing to do with those old fat dudes with the falsetto voices.  The club takes its name from the origins of Stand Up paddle surfing, when it was i
ntroduced to Waikiki Between the wars by Leroy & bobby Ah Choy and their beach boy colleagues who ran - and still run - the surfboard hire and outrigger rides at the most famous beach in the world.

President - elect Col Broomham informs me that the club signed up 30 members and 11 kids at their first sign-on last Sunday, and they have affiliated with Surfing Queensland.  CLub Secretary is Jodie Marsh , other half of 'Woogie Marsh,' who just happens to be the fastest paddler in town.  Col and spouse Annie are a real waterman couple who, in addition to their Stand Up passion, both style it on longboards and, in the not too
distant past, were a world class tandem duo.

Col says the Beach boy club aims to "bring the aloha spirit to Stand up Paddle Surfing in our town.  We aim to educate paddlers of all levels of expertise in how to surf safely and survive our hectic crowds."
